Founded in 1901, Tidewater Oil and Gas had created the prominent Flying A brand for its premium-grade gasoline in 1932. With the merger Paul Getty gained control in 1937, it became Flying A. In 1954, the Essex Oil and Gas Company drilled for Tidewater Oil company, the 'Flying A' brand was expanding to the west coast thru Route 66. They owned over 100 stations and 32 were located on Route 66. The 'Flying A' logo was meant to connote smoothness and speed for your automobile and so was adapted for the car traveling public. In 1966 Phillips bought Tidewater Oil Company renaming it Phillips 66. Today The Flying A wings are replaced with the FuelAmerica wings as shown in title above.
